I'm a freelance writer from Illinois. I graduated from Saint Xavier University in 2005.  I spent three semesters as the Viewpoint s editor for the student newspaper, The Xavierite, and for one semester was also editor-in-chief.  After graduating from college, I found employment at a local newspaper, the Southwest News-Herald, and worked as a reporter covering local government for 2 ½ years before focusing on freelance writing full time.

This site is still under construction.  I will be gradually adding links to things I've written in the categories above.  You can contact me at johndrewmarkley AT gmail DOT com.

I write book reviews for the print and web editions of the Sacramento Book Review, the popular science fiction/fantasy site Book Spot Central, and pop culture site Crucial Taunt. I have conducted interviews with popular authors Tobias Buckell and Neal Asher. In addition, I write at my own blog, Vast and Cool and Unsympathetic, which has book reviews and commentary on various subjects in the science fiction field.

I have written on politics for over a decade, starting with my high school paper. He has since written for a number of political sites including Antiwar.com, Lewrockwell.com, Strike the Root, and The Libertarian Enterprise. I am currently a blogger at the libertarian activism and education site Bureaucrash, and also maintains my own blog on political and social issues, The Superfluous Man.

I am also the author of the video game/humor blog Pointless Side Quest.

I contributed the chapter “Reflections on the school experiences of a student with autistic spectrum disorders” in the recently published Autism and Developmental Disabilities: Current Practices and Issues, volume 18 in the “Advances in Special Education” series from Emerald Publishing Group Limited.
